A group of six generous students from the football club are heading to Bangalore this summer to take coaching sessions for deprived youngsters in the area.

The young men will co-operate with the Parikrma Foundation to organise and run a three-week football camp.

On May 22, Joe Greig, Tomos Jones, Matt Corfield, Liam Grimmer, Rhys Swierkot and Joe Heraghty will make the adventurous 5000-mile trip to southern Asia.

The foundation specifically provides quality education to less fortunate children, and so the university footballers will work in unison with the foundation to assist those from traditionally poorer backgrounds.

The camp will run from May 22 to June 9, which coincides with the summer holidays of the foundation, when the children typically have no access to the facilities.

The typical day will consist of morning coaching sessions for up to 50 kids from 7am onward and again in the evening, split by a well-deserved break in between.

Meals, snacks and water will also be provided for the children each day, required to combat the extreme temperatures and differing climates that the continent will offer.

Fourth year Joe Greig jumped at the chance to participate in such a rewarding project, saying: “When Matt approached me to go to, I knew it was an opportunity I wouldn’t be offered again. Everyone’s really looking forward to it, so it will certainly be a great experience.”

The foundation will provide costs for running the camp, while the students are currently aiming to raise money to help pay for essentials such as food, water, equipment and pitch hire.

After a challenging yet highly enjoyable three weeks, the boys hope to travel for one week to see the incredible sights that the country has to offer.

It will be the experience of a lifetime, yet also an important insight into the different way of living that the students are familiar with.

With their flights and hotel booked, and a couple of important fundraising events yet to come, this exciting and selfless trip is rapidly approaching.

Joe said: “We have a FIFA tournament approaching, and a seven-a-side football tournament also in the coming weeks.”
