The University of Stirling has been named the 46th best “young university” in the world, and the second best in the UK, by Times Higher Education.
The list ranks 200 universities from 48 countries around the world that are under the age of fifty. This is the third time that Stirling has broken the top fifty since 2012: the university ranked 50th in 2012 and 47th in 2015.
The UK was the best-represented country on the list, with 27 universities. However, only four of these broke the top 100, while only Stirling and the University of Dundee, which came 16th, were ranked in the top fifty.
The University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Gerry McCormac, said: “Building on the university’s global reputation is one of our key strategic goals as we look to the future and we welcome the improvement in this year’s Times Higher Young University Rankings.
“As we celebrate 50 years of innovation and excellence at Stirling, this accolade reinforces the quality of our research and the impact it has on society, our excellence in teaching, the skills and competencies of our graduates, and our hard-earned global reputation.
“Our positioning is also testament to the commitment and hard work of our staff and I would like to thank them for their efforts.”
The university was congratulated in several tweets, sent following their announcement of the ranking.
Roger Mullin, MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, wrote: “Thrilled to bits as an Honorary Professor at Stirling University that it ranks in top 50 globally of universities under 50 yrs old.”
Professor Jayne Donaldson, the Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport, said: “A great place to work.”
The THE website states that, in order to feature on the list, institutions must meet high standards of performance across teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer.

To determine the best young universities in the world, THE uses the same 13 performance indicators it uses to calculate the best overall universities in the world, but less weight is given to the university’s reputation.
This will be the University of Stirling’s last year of eligibility for the list, as it is currently celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.
