Former First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond has been charged with two cases of attempted rape and nine further sexual assaults.
The 64 year old was arrested today, 24th January, and appeared in front of Edinburgh sheriff court.
The accused has also been charged with two indecent assaults and a breach of the peace. Salmond is facing a total of 14 charges against him.
No plea or declaration has been made at this stage however the accused has been committed for further examination.
A later court date is to be arranged.
Following the private hearing, Salmond expressed his innocence and explained that he will cooperate with the courts decision.
“So, let me say at the outset, I am innocent of any criminality whatsoever.”
These charges follow the collapse of a judicial review by the government into accusations against Salmond of a similar nature. “As you will remember in the long process of judicial review, I made it clear in order to respect the court that I would not make comment until proceedings are concluded.”
Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister, has refused to make comment due to the proceeds being live. However she did comment that the news of the arrest of the former First Minister would come as a “shock to many”.
