This Sunday will see the University of Stirling Golf Club’s fourth and fifth teams clash in the semi-final of the Scottish Conference Cup.
Stirling 4s and Stirling 5s will tee off at Alloa Golf Club on Sunday, after winning tough quarter final ties.
Stirling 4s scraped through to the semis after their match against UHI 2s went to a play off, while the 5s came out on top against SRUC 2s with a 5-3 victory.
Fourth team captain George Kent told Brig: “It’s definitely our game to lose, but golf is unpredictable. The team have been practicing a lot in their own time.”
The 4s are certainly the ones to watch after knocking out UHI 2s, who were the top seeded team.
Kent also added: “I’m confident in our ability. It will be a close game, and the 5s deserve all the respect for getting this far.”
There is a healthy competitive spirit between the two sides. Last semester saw the two teams face each other in a league decider which saw the 4s come off on top, by 5.5 to 2.5.
Fifth team captain Lewis Fraser told Brig that he thinks the previous match felt a lot closer than what the score reflected, and asserted that his team have improved leaps and bounds since last semester.
He said: “I have more players available to choose from this time round, and we have a lot of first years who have much more experience now compared to last semester.”
Fraser agrees that the match will be close, and he will be motivated to win after the disappointment of losing against the 4s last time round.
The teams are, in no particular order, as follows:
4s: George Kent, Rachel Thomson, Angus Bendall, Emily Michelle Laws, Ethan Campbell, Spencer Yates, Sam Edmond, Will Kent.
5s: Fraser Matthews, Mirren Fraser, Grant Cunningham, Jennifer Rankine, Lewis Fraser, Philip Inderthal, Charlie Ellam, Christopher Garry.
Golf president Sean Davidson is extremely proud of both sides for making it this far in the competition.
He said: “It’s great that we will have a Stirling representative in the final. I think it is testament to the hard work put in by everyone in the golf club this year. George and Lewis (4th and 5th team captains) have both been excellent all year and they should both be very pleased of what they have achieved regardless of the result on Sunday. I’m looking forward to sitting back on Sunday and enjoying what will be a great celebration of Stirling uni Golf.”
The winners of this Sunday’s match will face either SRUC’s first team or Heriot Watt’s first team in the final, who play at Elmwood Golf Course in Fife this Sunday.
The first tee off time is 10.20am.
