For the second season of Big Little Lies we are back in Monterey. Winner of numerous Emmys and Golden Globes, the second season is already a success, with a 34% increase from the first season premiere.
Big Little Lies explores every aspect of the lives of the starring characters, from motherhood to friendship to female empowerment. This ‘girl power’ is reflected in the real world, the show is produced by acting powerhouses, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, as well as being directed by a female director, Andrea Arnold.
The first season tackled difficult topics such as sexual assault and domestic violence, whist the second season pilot focuses more on the aftermath of Perry Wright’s death. It’s about grief, guilt and the secret that keeps the 5 women together.
The show starts on the first day back at school- the first time the five main characters are back together since since Perry’s death occurred at the end of the first season. A death which sees them at the centre of a murder investigation.
This season explores the different ways that the ‘accident’ affects their lives. Their alibis present a make or break situation.
This season is going to introduce new characters and new story lines, which will bring a new dynamic. We’ll get to see more of Bonnie, the character played by Zoe Kravitz, known from films such as Divergent and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Bonnie’s life was changed irremediably following the season one finale fatality. This means we will see a new side of her, more melancholic and tormented.
But it’s a new addition to the cast that threatens to shake up the cast more than anything. Perry’s mom, played by Meryl Streep, is in Monterey to find out what really happened the night her son died. Streep’s character brings disarray to the web of lies.
No one could have played this character but the amazing Meryl Streep, the actress admitted to be a big fan of the first season and she accepted to take over this role before even reading the script.
