A by-election will be held in mid-October to fill the role of Union President, the Student Union’s Board of Trustees has announced.
The Trustee Board met on Friday August 16 to discuss the next steps after Nelson Acquah resigned as Union President earlier this month, citing personal reasons for his departure.
The board has said that a by-election is in line with the Union’s Constitution and Schedules, and that until such time that the role of President is filled, the duties will be carried out by the other Sabbatical Officers to “ensure appropriate representation on University committees and elsewhere.”
A statement from the board of trustees said that “in the meantime, everyone in the Union is focused on delivering for students at the start of a new and exciting term ensuring we all work together to make student’s lives better.”
The Union has acknowledged the challenges that the timing of the election will have, as due to its position in the academic year, it could make the decision to run for a full-time position much more difficult for potential candidates.
The exact timetable for the by-election is to be announced at a later date.
