Safia Ali was supposed to be Labour’s candidate in Falkirk at the upcoming general election on December 12.
Voters will now be unable to vote for Labour in Falkirk as the party has withdrawn their support for her candidacy, due to allegedly posting anti-semitic content on social media.
However, it is after the close of nominations which means a new candidate cannot be selected and Ali’s name will still appear on ballot papers.
A Labour spokesperson said: “Safia Ali is no longer be the Labour Party’s candidate for Falkirk. We have taken immediate action on this matter. We deeply regret that she was selected.”
Scottish Labour general secretary Michael Sharpe added: “I deeply regret the people of the Falkirk constituency will no longer have a Labour candidate to campaign and vote for on December 12.
“There is no place for antisemitism, or any form of racism and bigotry, in our party. That is why Labour is taking robust action to root it out of our movement and wider society.
“The party has significantly strengthened our procedures, with swift suspensions, new processes for rapid expulsions and an education programme for members.
“While I cannot go into details about individual cases, I can confirm that the party has acted immediately and decisively to remove this candidate.”
At the last general election in 2017, the SNP held the seat with 38.9% of the vote compared to Scottish Labour who placed second with 29.8% of the vote
Voters will now face the choice of John McNally (SNP), Tom McLaughlin (Green), Austin Reid (Lib Dems) and Lynn Munro (Tories).
