Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced strict new measures to combat the spread of the Coronavirus in what is being described as a UK-wide lockdown.

In an address to the nation last night (Monday March 23), Johnson announced that people should stay at home unless absolutely necessary and to minimise contact with others.

The PM announced that people will only be allowed to leave their homes to;

  • Shopping for food and medicine
  • For medical reasons or providing care for a vulnerable person
  • Travelling to work if you are a key worker or your work cannot be done from home.

All businesses deemed unnecessary (clothing and electronic stores) have been asked to close, alongside libraries, playgrounds and places of worship.

The government has also banned gatherings of more than two people, except for members of your household.

Weddings and baptisms have been cancelled but funerals will continue, but they will be restricted to immediate family.

Police will be able to issue fines to anyone breaking the government’s lockdown orders.

The government will review these measures in three weeks.

Ending his address Johnson said,

“I want to thank everyone who is working flat out to beat the virus.

“Everyone from the supermarket staff to the transport workers to the carers to the nurses and doctors on the frontline.

“But in this fight we can be in no doubt that each and every one of us is directly enlisted. Each and every one of us is now obliged to join together.”

“To halt the spread of this disease. To protect our NHS and to save many many thousands of lives.

“And I know that as they have in the past so many times, the people of this country will rise to that challenge.

“And we will come through it stronger than ever.

“We will beat the coronavirus and we will beat it together.”

The First Minister held an address shortly after the Prime Minister’s, echoing his advice.

The advice is simple, Save Lives, Stay at Home.
