Stirling’s MP Alyn Smith has delivered a blunt message to the Daily Mail following an article highlighting rural areas for people to self-isolate amid the Coronavirus outbreak.

Smith shared a screenshot of the article, titled “Britain’s brilliant boltholes: The best places to revel in splendid isolation,” to his Facebook page saying,

“Representing a big part of rural Scotland and part of a national park, I say this in all sincerity, the Daily Mail can f*ck off. Please stay at home, our community is not your bolt hole. This is not a holiday opportunity, please take it seriously.”

There was a massive concern about unnecessary travel over the weekend, when parts of Callander and the Loch Lomond national park were met with crowds of visitors.

The national park has been closed as a result of this.

The most recent advice from both the UK and Scottish Governments is to stay at home and not travel unless absolutely necessary and to minimise contact with other people.

In an additional statement Smyth criticised people who had travelled over the weekend,

“Emergency legislation is being introduced to help authorities enforce protections over public health.

“Social distancing does not mean enjoy a day out in the country with your family and friends, it means stay at home, and only leave the house if you absolutely need to.

“People who have defied this are behaving recklessly, and endangering others.”

Stirling’s MSP Bruce Crawford called people who had fled to rural areas selfish and said that they had endangered communities,

“The advice is not to go out and enjoy a holiday, the advice is to stay home. Some people have behaved selfishly, flooding small rural communities with a dangerous increase in footfall. Far from social distancing, this is a real danger to public health.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared new measures as part of a UK-wide lockdown last night and called for people to stay at home to save lives and avoid unnecessary travel.
