Scotrail have announced that students in Scotland can receive a 50% discount on an “off-peak” return ticket until the 24th December 2020.
The offer which does not need to be pre-booked, can be redeemed via a staffed ticket office and showing a valid student ID photograph is part of an attempt to make it easier for students in Scotland to get home for christmas although is only applicable on a scotrail train and between any two train stations in Scotland.
Students can use the return portion of the ticket within 1 month of outward travel, allowing the return leg of the journey to be valid until the 23rd January next year depending on the date of departure.
Lesley Kane, ScotRail Commercial Director, said: “Students are going through a hard enough time just now trying to keep up with their studies while worrying about catching coronavirus and balancing their finances.
“We think this half price deal on tickets is the best gift we can give them before Christmas and we’re sure it will be very popular amongst students who want to get home to see loved ones at this special family time of the year.”
The general secretary of the RMT, Mick Cash said “RMT supports the railway in playing its role in ensuring that people can see their loved ones this Christmas and I will be seeking urgent discussions with all the train companies and Government to ensure that this is carefully and properly planned to protect the safety of both workers and passengers.”
