Vegan Christmas tips

Day 15

It’s December 15 and only nine days left until Christmas (whaaat??!! Time flies). Since Christmas is just around the corner it’s time to start planning the Christmas feast. But what do you do if you are vegan and your whole family is not? It can be a little tricky but I am gonna give you some tips for a delicious vegan Christmas that your whole family can also enjoy!

My favorite Christmas treat has to be gingerbread cookies. Luckily, they are super easy to make vegan. There are tons of recipes for vegan gingerbread cookies and they are awesome. If you have a cookie recipe that you really love but it’s not vegan, don’t worry. You can replace the dairy products in the recipe with non-dairy versions and no-one will notice anything. And if there is one egg in the recipe you can just leave it out and it won’t make a difference, I’ve tried this and the cookies turned out to be really good.

Traditionally, in Finland we eat ham and different casseroles on Christmas but they are not exactly vegetarian or vegan friendly. However, there are tons of mock meat versions of Christmas hams in the stores and if you can’t find any, they are fairly simple to make. Or you can just leave the ham out. The traditional Finnish casseroles are potato-, carrot- and swede casserole. Now, usually they contain cream or milk but you can just replace those with non-dairy products and you are all set.

My final tip is a Finnish Christmas tart that is sooo good that I have to share it! It is made with filo pastry and plum jam. Filo pastry is often vegan so just make sure that you buy a vegan one and you are good to go. Once you have the pastry and the jam, you cut the pastry into squares and put about one tablespoon of the jam in the middle of it. After that you fold it so that it looks like a star. The photograph below illustrates how it should look but you can get creative with it and fold it however you like. Once they are folded, put them in the oven for 15 minutes at 225 Celsius. Once they are ready, sprinkle some powdered sugar on top and enjoy!
