The nominations are finally out for the 78th annual Golden Globes. This years ceremony will take place on Sunday the 28th of February after being pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This year made history as the first time more than one woman was nominated for Best Director: Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennel (Promising Young Woman) and Regina King (One Night in Miami). King is only the second Black woman to ever be nominated in the category.
Netflix once again dominated as Mank and The Crown lead with six nominations each. In total, the streaming giant received a whopping 42 nominations, eight more than in 2020.
The best actor nominees caused a little bit of a stir on Twitter as fan favourite Steven Yeun was snubbed for his role in Minari while James Cordon snaffled a nomination for The Prom. Minari has been creating award buzz since its release on the festival circuit and is Certified Fresh on Rotton Tomatoes. The Prom, on the other hand, only has a 55% rating on the review site and was blasted on Twitter.
Other controversial decisions include two nominations for Emily in Paris, the Sex and The City-esque Netflix show starring Lily Collins, no nomination for Paul Mescal for Normal people and Kate Hudson’s nomination for Music.
Music made news late last year after it was called out for its misrepresentation of autism. Popstar Sia, the director of the film, responded to criticism on Twitter angrily. In one case she told an autistic actor, who had commented on the casting of Maddie Zeigler as the autistic lead, “maybe you’re just a bad actor”.
The most surprising snub was Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You. The show wowed critics and audiences alike and made the top of many 2020 best-of lists. The Guardian even called it “a thing of intangible beauty”.
The late Chadwick Boseman was nominated for his role in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The actor also appeared in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Blood‘s which was, surprisingly, not nominated in a single category.
Viewers from the UK will be able to watch the awards on the Golden Globes Facebook page or via their website. However, anyone wanting to tune in over here will be in for a late one as it doesn’t start until 1:00 am on the 29th.
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will host the awards once again. They previously hosted the show from 2013-2015 and are replacing Ricky Gervais who hosted it for the 5th time last year.
