The Talk: How to be your own Valentine

6 mins read

Did writing this headline make me cringe? Not a chance in hell. Being your own Valentine is empowering, baby. It’s also the best way to assure you get everything you want on your special Valentine’s Day.

Okay, so we’re single and we’re in lockdown. Well, some of us are. Our gin collection has slowly been guzzled by the passing months. Now, all we had to find joy in is anything with an elasticated waist and TikTok trends. Guys, it’s fine, we can totally come back from this.

All we need is a little reminder that we’re elite.

And that means we have to start treating ourselves that way. Today is the day we celebrate ourselves: we start with a long-lie because it’s a Sunday. Sunday-fun-day. So, what can we actually do from the comfort of our own homes?

Well, we start by treating ourselves right. That means a facemask to bring back your sensational glow, a bath to wipe off the V-day dread and the perfect playlist to tie it together. I’m talking about the greats here: Meredith Brookes, TLC and Dua Lipa.

What we’re not doing is thinking about exes or what we would be doing if lockdown didn’t exist.

Today is all about you, my friend. It’s about finding joy in the things that you keep for the good moods. Those films you’ve been meaning to watch are ready now. So we’re not a fan rom-coms? Chill, we can totally vibe to a comedy.

You know what? Let’s take it a step further. Today is about cleansing yourself of anything bad on your doorstep. Starting with all those annoying people on your social media: get rid of them.

We’re all living on our phones right now; I can’t count how many people I’ve wiped out my lists.

And you what? It felt good.

Find the people you love and spend time with them. Whether this is done through a screen or in person. Set up a group call with your people, make cute little drinks and make plans. Big plans. Like going to very cool balls in London or travelling across Europe: design the plan for your ultimate fantasy.

And for inspiration, live vicariously through your favourite films. Listen, I’m not going to tell you to sob your heart out to The Notebook. I am not a sadist. However, a great film that I love to love is Someone Great on Netflix.

Emotional? Hell yeah. But definitely worth the ride.

I’m telling you right now to stay away from anything dog-related when it comes to films. This is not that day. Right now, we’re only accepting good vibes and laugh-out-loud choices. Because today is about feeling good about yourself.

And making yourself feel good: I am your personal sales woman for self-love.

You need to love yourself like no one else. More than your friends and family love you. The love you have for yourself can’t afford to be rivalled. Take a look at yourself, you have survived all your worst days and got here.

You know that pretty lingerie set you bought before lockdown? You know the one, we all have that set. Wear them. Break those bad boys in and feel sexy as hell. Even if you’re wearing the worst outfit, knowing what’s underneath is good enough for some.

Because there is no right time anymore, there’s only now. If this year has taught us one thing, it’s to be impatient. Stop waiting for the right time or the right person, because guess what? This is the right time and you are the right person.

Celebrate yourself: take a photoshoot of yourself. Take many photographs, like enough to fill a wall. Flaunt your favourite outfit like your posing for Vogue. Wear the bold lipstick. Be flirty, free, and fun. Do it in your back garden, or that specific spot in your bedroom with the good lighting.

Small feat? I think not. I think you need to treat yourself to that thing in your shopping basket. I think you need to take a moment to appreciate yourself. I also think now is a really good time to drink some water, because sometimes we all forget to do that.

Just enjoy today because you have a reason to. Today is our modern day of love, instead of keeping all yours for someone else, give it to yourself. Your loved ones, your friends, your pets. Take advantage of all the good energy and harvest it for yourself like a dragon hoards gold.

And finally, Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope that you remember that today is all about feeling yourself. I know that can hard in times like these, but a sharp benefit is that you have the time. So, spoil yourself and enjoy the day of modern romance.
