Stefanos Tsitsipas has knocked Rafael Nadal out of the Australian Open, ending the Spaniard’s hopes of winning a record 21st Grand Slam men’s title.
The fifth seed from Greece came back from two sets down to claim the victory, winning 3-6 2-6 7-6(4) 6-4 7-5.
In doing so, Tsitsipas joins Italian Fabio Fognini as the only two men to have achieved such a feat at Grand Slam level.
Speaking after his win Tsitsipas said:
“I have no words to describe what went on on court. It’s an unbelievable feeling to play at such a level.”
He will be hoping to continue that high level when he plays against Daniil Medvedev in Friday’s semifinals. The Russian beat compatriot Andrey Rublev 7-5 6-3 6-2 to advance at the Australian Open.
