Rents on all university owned accommodation will be frozen for the next academic year.
The decision to freeze rent for a single academic year was made by the University Rent Review group which includes Josh Muirhead, the Student Union’s Vice President Communities and Amy Smith, the Union President.
Centro house was not included in the agreement because this is not fully owned by the university
Commenting on the rent freeze, Josh Muirhead, Vice-President Communities of the Students Union said
“‘I’m beyond overjoyed that the University will freeze rent prices for the next academic year. This outcome has been over 3 years in the making since we first negotiated a rent freeze on selected properties for students. This is a great win for students in what has been a very difficult year in terms of their studies, wellbeing and financial situations.”
Commenting on the announcement, a University spokesperson told Brig that the university is “committed to working with the Students’ Union to ensure that students are able to access a wide range of high-quality, affordable accommodation”
The spokesperson added that:
“Following a proposal put forward by Accommodation Services to the Rent Review Group, which comprises representatives from across the University and the Students’ Union, rent proposals for the 2021/22 academic year were unanimously agreed – and have since been confirmed by University Court.
“In addition, students experiencing financial hardship in relation to accommodation costs will continue to have access to a University support fund, which has been retained at an increased level.”
