Amazon CEO to step down in July this year

The founder and chief executive officer of online shopping giant Amazon, Jeff Bezos has confirmed that he will depart from the role on July 5th this year.

Bezos who started Amazon in 1994 , will be succeeded by Andy Jassy who already holds an executive role within the company.

In a statement , explaining the symbolic nature of the date that he selected for his departure , Bezos said:

“We chose that date because it’s a sentimental one for me. It’s the date that Amazon was incorporated in 1994, exactly 27 years ago,”

Bezos added that “I’m very excited to move into the exec chair role where I will focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives.”

Jassy, who has been a chief executive within Amazon’s web services (AWS) division since 2016, has worked within Amazon since 2003
