SUDS have expertly adapted to the limitations induced by the coronavirus pandemic once again. After the successful online production of their annual March Monologues, SUDS’ newest production Contractions will also be available to watch online.
Directed by Rachael Campbell and produced by Franco Nazareno, Contractions is a dark comedy written by Mike Barklett. It follows sales worker Emma as she is assessed by her markedly unnamed ‘Manager’.
“I was really drawn to the intense, creeping abuse of power that is developed throughout the play”, Rachael told Brig. “The two-person cast allowed for production to take place while Covid restrictions were still in place”.
In the beginning, challenging online Zoom rehearsals impeded production. Rehearsals became much more enjoyable and productive when Covid restrictions began to lift and in-person rehearsals became feasible.
“The script is incredibly demanding”, Franco told Brig. “It was incredibly fun to watch our two cast members, Cei and Maddie, develop their characters’ behaviours and mannerisms.
“Cei and Maddie are perfect for the roles. Their chemistry is undeniable. We are very excited for everyone to watch it”.
You can rent Contractions from June 1 to June 3 for £2 on the Macrobert Arts Centre’s online streaming platform.
