Timeless fashion in television

6 mins read

Everyone loves a good show to binge-watch, but plot lines are just part of it. One major thing to be admired is fashion in television and how it shapes trends.

No, I am not talking about the criminally unfashionable Emily in Paris. If that came to your mind when I said fashion, just leave. Like, right now. No, I want to talk about iconic looks in television like Killing Eve’s Villanelle’s killer pink tulle Molly Goddard dress. It was everything.

Are people likely to wear that on the streets? Maybe not in 2020, but fashion has bloomed. There is no such thing as ‘too out there’ and nor should there be. Maybe it’s because of the TikTok boom that people are more willing to own their fashion identity. Whether that be with leather harnesses or strawberry dresses, regardless of whether you are allergic to strawberries. Here are a couple of fashionable moments from television that is worthwhile admiring:

Euphoria

So the true beauty of HBO’s Euphoria is that there are numerous styles to be admired. There’s Rue Bennet’s affordable and nostalgic looks or Maddy’s Instagram baddie style. What’s to love is that anyone can wear Converse (or Primark’s finest knock offs) and an oversized hoodie. To embody Maddy’s style, you could probably find her drool-worthy cut-out co-ord’s on ASOS or her cutesy dresses. The matter of fact here is that Euphoria fashion has something for everyone, from chokers to anime-like vibes.

Sure, Netflix’s original series flopped but the fashion is forever. Everyone is so into the retro look right now and the show is literally all about fashion. Bomber jackets did have a hot moment but admittedly it has passed. RIP. Girlboss is all about that 80’s aesthetic, with the denim jumpsuits that are still a hell of a look. The whole flared trousers style is back and better than ever, from jeans to every other kind of trouser. For some reason, low cut jeans are back, and I simply cannot accept this. However, one piece of fashion in Girlboss is most definitely the East-West Jacket: it’s retro, it’s colourful and honestly just oozes good vibes.

Dynasty

Do not tell me you don’t want to wear one of Fallon Carrington’s power suits. It’s just simply not believable, not sorry about it. Costume designer Meredith Markworth-Pollack understood the assignment in the reboot. Now, is it affordable? Absolutely not. Dynasty is all about Burberry trench coats and Gucci fanny-packs. Its powerful, feminine, and dominating style must be admired. They even made metallics classy and chic, which is no easy feat. Even the men look divine in tailored suits matched with turtlenecks, a classy yet achievable look. Oh and don’t me started on a bold, patterned shirt, yes, please! I know we often praise women’s looks on television but here is where everyone is to be adored

The Politician

Now, it’s been a hot minute since we watched the California-based comedy. However, the looks are still served hot and must still be awed at. The aesthetic of this show was everything: Chanel tunics, Mary Jane pumps and pink corduroy suits inspired by Gloria Steinem. What made the costumes eye-catching was all the colour, the boldness, the monochrome, and it looked confident. Not chic, like you would find in Dynasty, but rather gripping. Encouraging audiences to experiment with colour, patterns, and shapes. There was no fear of pushing boundaries, something that should be encouraged when it comes to fashion. The looks raced from whimsical, presidential, to boho couture through the seasons and none didn’t impress.

Killing Eve

We started with Villanelle and we’re going to end with her. How one character’s style carried a whole show, I will never know. Yet here we are. Ever in awe of the serial killers influence over our wardrobes. Her style is more Pinterest board rather than Insta baddie. There is classy flawlessness to her fashion, it’s expensive, rich, and elegant. Normally, that doesn’t appeal to a younger audience but what made it a success was that some looks can be recreated. Like the waist-cinching belt to emphasise your silhouette or lace-up boots with denim shorts and a shirt. An effortless blend of punk and chic. These are definitely looks that can be re-made in your own image and definitely should be.

Killing Eve is available to stream on iPlayer.
