University of Stirling student, Ross Whyte guaranteed silver in the Winter Olympics curling semi-final yesterday (Friday, February 18) as Team GB triumphed over the USA.
Ross Whyte, who is currently enrolled in sports studies and selected as an alternate for the tournament, will have an opportunity to win a gold medal against Sweden in the men’s curling final on Saturday.
The triumph marks Team GB’s first medal of the entire Olympic tournament.
Whyte secured the silver medal after his side played out a nervy 8-4 victory against their trans-Atlantic counterparts which went all the way to the end.
The relief could almost be felt through the TV screen as the quartet threw their arms up in the air after proceedings were ended.
Bruce Mouat, who skips for the team, spoke to The Guardian after the pulsating competition:
“The reaction that I showed, the scream at the end, was a release of tension and pressure.
And I’m really happy to be stepping into that gold medal match with these guys next to me.”
Team GB women also got revenge in their semi-final victory against Sweden, who bested them only four years ago in the same competition.
Former University of Stirling student, Mili Smith participated in their scintillating 12-11 victory, which was the highest scoring match in the competition. The women were also skipped by honorary Stirling graduate, Eve Muirhead.
They will also play out their final on Saturday against Japan, for an additional opportunity to clinch a gold medal for Team GB.
