Phoebe Bridgers releases new track Sidelines

Indie musician Phoebe Bridgers has released a new original song for the upcoming TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s book Conversations with Friends.

The song was teased earlier this week as it features in the trailer for the show. The full song is available on streaming platforms from today (Friday).

This is the first time she has put out original music since the 2020 release of her Grammy-nominated album Punisher.

But fans were sad to learn that this will be Phoebe’s only original musical release this year according to a press release, despite rumours of a potential new album.

The new track Sidelines features Phoebe’s signature hauntingly honest lyrics, but it lacks the spark that made her previous work so resonant.

The song discusses fears and falling in love with someone who brings out the best in you.

The strongest lyric by far is in the second verse: “Used to fetishize myself, now I’m talking to my house plants.”

Sidelines is out now. Conversations with Friends comes to BBC3 on May 15.
