Like every year on Mother’s Day, most of us celebrate our mothers and everything they have done for us. We give them chocolates, flowers and cards to remind them how much we love them and what amazing mothers they have been and continue to be.
I have recently learned that this year, Burger King Germany had some unique and quirky plans to express its gratitude.

That’s right: Burger King Germany gave out free “Pregnancy Whoppers” to both mothers and expectant mothers as a part of their entertaining promotion on May 8 (when Mother’s Day is celebrated in Germany), exclusively at the Burger King restaurant on Tempelhofer Damm, in Berlin.
This original, thoughtful idea has been in the works for months.
Earlier this year, between the 4th and 14th of January, a survey was conducted by Burger King to find out what the most popular pregnancy cravings are. A total of 1,070 women were surveyed, all between the ages of 16 to 45.
The result of Burger King’s study was that pregnancy cravings are real, normal, and, “whether it’s sweet, salty or both together – no expectant mum needs to feel alone when she’s in the mood for very special food combinations,” as the food company states on their website.
From their survey, Burger King found that overall, there are nine popular cravings pregnant women experience, all of which they then proceeded to include in their limited “Pregnancy Whoppers.”
The combinations included:
- Fried egg and banana
- Bratwurst and nut-nougat creme (similar to Nutella)
- Currywurst and fried herring
- Fish sticks and applesauce
- Cucumber and marmalade
- Strawberry ice cream and fries
- Cream and gherkins, a type of pickle
- Pie and beef (this is a double whopper with layers of cake, cream, fruit and beef)
- Vanilla ice cream and olives
According to the statistics on Burger King’s website, the most beloved combination is cucumber and marmalade, followed closely by fish fingers with applesauce and currywurst with fried herring.

The Internet’s take on this promotion has been mixed. Some have called these combinations “fake” or “an abomination,” but despite this, I consider Burger King’s project to be fun, creative and considerate.
While it is important for pregnant women to keep themselves healthy and remain reasonable when indulging in cravings, it is still lovely to see pregnancy cravings being normalised, rather than for women to be fat-shamed for having them.
