Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ comedy rock duo, Tenacious D, landed in Glasgow’s Hydro with an unforgettable performance on Thursday night (May 9). Walking into the standing section, it was obvious that a night of laughter was in store for the audience.
Dave Hill, American comedian, warmed up the crowd with some banter and a “pick up lines that will only work in Glasgow” bit.
As the clock struck nine and the lights dimmed once more after Dave’s set, a chant of “D” rippled through the crowd. The duo made their appearance to a roar of applause, and Kickapoo suitably kicked off the night.

A wild energy buzzed around the arena as in between each song screams, whistles, and chants erupted from fans.
Low Hangin’ Fruit, Rize of the Fenix, and Tribute kept the energy high as the crowd belted out the lyrics. Black and Gass weren’t short on energy either, jumping around on stage and keeping up an array of comedic bits.
One of these was the Biffy Pyro bit. The pyro tech kept “messing up” throughout the show only to be met with Black’s humorous outrage. Black’s disappointment with his roadies didn’t end there and joking frustration met every interaction between him and his crew.
The Metal had the supreme pair hiding on stage as the titular villain terrorised them throughout the song.
Sax A Boom saw a battle between Black and Gass for centre stage, one that ended in Gass “quitting”. As he walked off stage, he mooned the audience to prove his point, and Dude (I Totally Miss You) started up as Black revisited their friendship. A heartfelt reunion took place between the pair.
And then, it was time for the encore. Three final songs that the crowd never wanted to end started off with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Good Times Bad Times.
Master Exploder was up next, and you could tell the group were giving it their all in these final few minutes. To end on a hilarious note, Tenacious D ended their set with F*ck Her Gently as the crowd grabbed a partner for the last bit of dancing of the night.
While their set clocked in at an hour and a half, it felt like mere minutes had passed by. We had only just welcomed Tenacious D to Glasgow. Now, we were preparing our goodbyes and dashing off for a train.
Hopefully they will return to Scotland in the future. If you missed them this time, definitely try to make it next time. It’s truly an act for anyone – fans or not – with something entertaining for everyone.
