Sunak calls general election for July 4

Rishi Sunak has set the date for the next general election as July 4, 2024.

In the surprise announcement, Sunak vowed to “fight for every vote” after a tough few years since the last election in 2019.

Labour leader Keir Starmer said the election is “the moment the country needs and has been waiting for”, adding that it is a “chance to change for the better”.

First Minister and leader of the SNP John Swinney tweeted: “This is the moment to remove the Tory Govt and put Scotland First by voting SNP.

“People in Scotland know we stand up for them and protect them from the damage done by Westminster.”

Surprise election

Speculation had been growing that the election would be in autumn, but Sunak has gone for the first July election since 1945.

Parliament will be suspended from Friday and closed next Thursday, firing the starting gun for the upcoming election campaign.

With the Conservatives currently lagging far behind Labour in the national polls, the election is a gamble for Sunak.

The election date may be influenced by recent news of a fall in inflation, dropping to its lowest rate in three years.

Stirling candidates (so far)

As the election is during the summer, many students will be away from Stirling during this time.
