Based on Bethesda’s action role-playing game Fallout 4, the fan-made Fallout: London is a DLC-sized Mod that allows players to explore the post-apocalyptic city of London. This is the first time the series has left the United States. It offers fans a new perspective on how life before and after the nuclear war in another country.
Who made it
This project was created by Team FOLON®. They are both amateur and industry professionals who were financially supported by a community donations page.
It was due to this financial freedom provided by fans of the franchise that they could be creative without the constraints of the video game industry. An experience that the team described as a “true labor of love for all involved”.
The project began in early 2019 with a small team of developers working under the leadership of Dean ‘Prilladog’ Carter. The original goal of the team was to create a small side quest for Fallout 4 in a similar style to the default in-game quests.
The unique location of London attracted an influx of new members from across the world. This included developers and artists from Britain, America, Australia, Sweden, and Russia.
What to expect
The game is set to feature 7 factions that you can choose to ally yourself with. From Knights of the Round Table to the Isle of Dogs Crime Syndicate. The game will also incentivise melee and stealth combat .This is due to the lack of guns available from around the map.
History of development
In 2020 the team announced that the quest was now the size of Far Harbour, the third DLC update of Fallout 4 around 2.7 GB. This has since been further expanded substantially in the past years to roughly 35 GB.
This is comparable to the full base game size of Fallout 4.The team has faced endless struggles throughout the development process. This led the team to create a secure backup of the game. This ensured that the game will be partly released regardless of any publication issues.
This decision became vital to the continuous development of the game. After the Fallout TV series released on Amazon Prime in 2024 Bethesda released a next-gen update to the game.
This provided improved graphics, fixed issues, and increased performance. This update however broke key elements of Fallout London’s gameplay. This resulted in the game being unplayable and the project put on hold. Despite this setback, Fallout London was released on July 25, 2024, to widely positive reception from fans.
Outcome
In response to the positive feedback the development team thanked the fans.
“The team at Fallout London does this for the community, and we hope you’ll love our final product as much as we do”.
Fallout London is available for free on GOG.com and is a PC-only Mod unavailable on consoles.
