The final single off of Fontaines D.C’s forthcoming album Romance, has the band take a different approach to their Alternative sound.
Here’s The Thing (not the Sports Team song of the same) is another change from their traditional sound, embracing electronic elements and dirty guitars.
In a press release for the song, lead singer Grian Chattan described the song as, “An anxious tune that twists and turns in what it wants, back and forth between pain and numbness.”
He further went on to say, “It’s an urgent song, searching for autonomy in emotional extremes.”
The band premier the song with a clearly horror inspired music video directed by the up and coming Luna Carmoon.
Similarly to the song itself, the video leans into the anxious elements with visuals clearly inspired by The Craft.
Here’s The Thing opens sharply, the heavy guitars play a repeated riff before Grian starts to sing.
Lyrically, the song details anxiety within a relationship and a sense of shared pain. Grian repeats “I know your right” in the chorus, going into detail in the verse he sings, “if you tell them what the real story is, I’m afraid it wouldn’t play that well.”
Fontaines often speak of complicated relationships, with a majority of the songs off of their prior release Skinty Fia detailing some.
Interestingly, Here’s The Thing features a similar breathing sound during the verse that calls back to Romance’s first single, Starbuster.
The song ends the way it begins, Grian states one last time “I know you’re watching” as all the instruments cut out.
Here’s The Thing only builds the hype for Romance to a boiling point, becoming an instant classic in Fontaines D.C’s growing discography.
