Deftones ‘my mind is a mountain’ Single Review: A Grand Return to Form ★★★★☆

It’s only been five years since Nu metal legends Deftones released their last album, Ohms, but it’s felt like a lifetime.

Rumblings of new music from the band have circulated for the last couple of years; however, it was only earlier this year that it was fully confirmed by lead vocalist Chino Moreno.

When speaking to Kerrang! about their upcoming album, Chino described that:

“The creative part, to me, is always kind of the funnest part of being in this band,

“Performing is great, but coming up with something out of nothing, that feeling cannot be topped. And so when you get in the room with your friends, we’re laughing, we’re having fun and then someone does something and then I react to it or they react to what I’m doing, it goes in a circle and then, all of a sudden, we lift our heads up and there’s something that exists that didn’t exist before we walked in that room. That’s just great.”

With the release of my mind is a mountain, Deftones have pulled their sound back twenty years, and it’s a perfect tone to return to after all this time.

Unfortunately, as lead singles go, my mind is a mountain lacks a wow factor, however, it does establish that the band will continue to mix the shoegazey tones of Ohms with the harsh metal of their earlier albums.

My mind is a mountain starts heavy and rushes to a stop as the band swivels back and forth between shoegaze and metal. The pendulum momentum adds to the song’s tone and establishes a great basis going forward into subsequent singles.

My mind is a mountain is the lead single off of the band’s upcoming tenth studio album private music.
