Loch Lomond Flamingo Land project cancelled

Flamingo Land’s “Lomond Banks” tourist resort has been cancelled after years of pressure from the public today.

Planning permission was rejected by the Scottish government due to concerns of environmental damage to the Loch Lomond ecosystem.

The £40 million plans that included a hotel, over 100 lodges, a waterpark and a monorail line were proposed for a site in Balloch, West Dunbartonshire.

The plans for the resort were first submitted in 2018 and later rejected in 2019 after opposition. In 2024, all 14 members of the Trossachs Planning Authority board rejected Flamingo Land Ltd’s planning permission. The Scottish government’s Planning and Environmental Appeals Division (DPEA) later granted an appeal, which was rejected after Scottish ministers concluded that the plans did not meet the 49 required conditions they proposed.

Over 150,000 people signed a petition launched by the Scottish Greens.

Environmentalists, the public and the government were concerned with flood risks, “irreversible” loss of woodland and loss of natural beauty.

The Scottish Greens welcomed the decision:
