Development of new wayfinding trail in Stirling to begin following council approval

Council-approved plans for a new wayfinding trail across Stirling are set to begin, offering visitors an enhanced journey across the city centre and its landmarks, where it will showcase Stirling’s rich history and boost economic activity.

The trail will see an installation of a new walking route that will be marked with small interactive panels detailing interesting information about the city’s history, giving visitors insight into its secrets, events and myths through the storytelling and artwork of many historical figures such as William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots.

A range of ‘Welcome to Stirling’ signs will also be introduced in both the centre and key transport links, such as the bus station and park and ride sites, where directions and explorational guidance will be offered.

The trail is also designed to meet accessibility needs as information will be displayed in large and high contrast formats, and both braille and audio-description options will be available to support sensory requirements.

Enhancing Stirling’s tourism and economy

With a £330,000 boost from the Scottish Government, the project is primarily funded through the £214 million Stirling & Clackmannanshire City Region Deal, which aims to support the region’s economy over the next ten years.

An increase of 12,000 people is expected to use the trail, and around £300,000 is projected to be generated annually from additional tourism spending, which will benefit hospitality and businesses beyond those situated at primary attractions.

Councillor Susan McGill, Stirling Council Leader, stated: “I am delighted that we have approved the city centre trail. This targeted investment in our tourism offering will make it easier and more inspiring for people to explore our world-class history and heritage, spend more time here and support our local businesses.”

The trail will be installed by Stirling Council and design and procurement work is due to begin.
