Last One Laughing UK Season 2 review: a deeply competitive return

Last One Laughing has returned to Prime for a second season, bringing together a new group of comedians to see who will be the last one laughing.

Among the comedians were Romesh Ranganathan, Diane Morgan, Amy Gledhill, Alan Carr, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Maisie Adam. But this season proved harder than the previous as four other contestants faced off in the final episode.

In case you haven’t had the chance to see Last One Laughing yet, the premise is simple. Each contestant has to do everything in their power to make the others laugh, all the while trying to contain their own laughter, and take home the prize trophy. The host, Jimmy Carr, issues a yellow card to anyone who laughs for the first time. On the second instance of laughter, they receive a red card and must join him in the host room.

Heightened Stakes

This season had a 3-part release, a change from last year’s two-part schedule. The first three episodes were released March 19, the following two March 26, while the finale aired April 2. This change is likely due to the heightened stakes, with the first comedian not being eliminated until episode 4.

As previously mentioned, this season proved very competitive with four comedians making it to the final. Mel Giedroyc was the first to receive a red card in the finale, while the show’s reigning champ, Bob Mortimer, stayed on to defend his crown. Eventually succumbing to his own laughter, the finale saw British sitcom royalty David Mitchell go head-to-head against Aussie Sam Campbell.

To avoid any spoilers, let’s just say it was a tough fight. Both contestants found solace in their expressionlessness, and any attempt to make them laugh was soon found to be useless. I, however, could hardly contain myself.

Overall, season two proved to be a very worthy continuation of the series. Unexpected theatrical performances, Mortimer tunes, and special guests: this season has everything the first one does, and more.

My hopes are that Jimmy Carr can continue to assemble the UK’s greatest comedic minds, so that I have something to look forward to every March.
