Remediation work to bring the university in line with new guidance on RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) has begun today in the Study Zone.
It was discovered that several parts of the university had RAAC present just before welcome week this year, forcing the closure of several locations on campus including the Student’s Union and the Study Zone.
The university has stated that while preparatory works have been underway for some time, contractors will be commencing the bulk of the remediation work in the week commencing December 11.
In a statement in the Student Bulletin, the university has acknowledged that some construction work will be heard across the atrium, which is currently serving as a multi-use study space:
“The contractors will do what they can to minimise the noise but, there will be periods where the impact will be heard across the Atrium.”
For many students, the semester is over, however, some postgraduate students still have classes and assignments as the work commences.
The uni hopes that after the completion of this work, the Study Zone will return to use by the spring. It is unknown at this time how long the drilling and disruption will last, but the university has said that they will release a statement in the new year with further updates on the situation.
