Time is ticking and Christmas is creeping closer by the day. As everyone gets their mulled wine and advent calendars at the ready, it’s time to worry about that perfect gift for those special people in your life.

Sometimes a store bought gift just won’t cut it and you need to make it that little bit more personal. Or, like many people this year, you just can’t afford those big pricey items so homemade might just be the way to go.

Struggling for ideas? Here are eight of the best homemade Christmas gift ideas that you can make this year for the special people in your life.

Hot chocolate snowman

Know someone with a sweet tooth and a love for all things cute and Christmassy? This might just be the gift for them. As the seasons get colder and we’re all wrapped up in bed watching films, doesn’t a cute snowman filled with hot chocolate, marshmallows and candy canes sound like the perfect gift?

Simply buy some jars of different sizes, stack three from biggest to smallest. Fill the bottom one with hot chocolate mix, the middle with marshmallows and the top with crushed or small candy canes. Decorate the top with a smiley snowman face. You could even add a small hat or scarf to your new snowman friend before sending him off to his new home to be enjoyed.

Maybe even add a special note or personal feature to your little snowman friend and you’ve got yourself the perfect holiday gift for friends or family.

Handmade bookmarks – perfectly paired with a ‘mystery date with a book’

This gift is the perfect staple for any book-loving friends you might have. These very easy to make bookmarks could be the perfect stand-alone present for fellow bookworms, or it could be perfectly paired with a ‘mystery book’ wrapped up to give a little more personality. You could even add a hot chocolate sachet or some sweets to set up the perfect book date!

Recipe journal book

Have any recipes that you know are a staple to their cooking journey, or a personal favourite of theirs that you love? Make them into a personalised recipe book!

You could even add photos from times that these recipes remind you of, or even just general pictures of you guys together, add little notes and just have some fun with it! This is the perfect gift to make if you love to get a little creative.

Homemade candles

It’s officially cosy season which means hot chocolate by the fireplace wrapped in blankets watching movies, but somethings missing… A nice candle to add to the comforts of home, so why not make some personal ones.

You can either start from scratch and melt your own wax, from old candles or buy the wax yourself, or you could even just paint candles and add your own creative touch. This is a simple but perfect little present to bring that extra little light to your loved ones this holiday season.

Sweetie tree

We all have a little sweet tooth at times, especially in the winter when all you want to do is curl up in a blanket and watch a Christmas classic with some chocolate treats. This craft is the perfect gift for those nights.

Simply buy your favourite little chocolate treats, a polystyrene foam cone and grab some glue. Separately glue each treat onto the cone until it looks like your perfectly desired sweet treat tree. Friends and family will have a cute little decoration that is also edible!

Grab some yarn and some knitting needles or crochet hooks, and keep your favourite people warm in this cold weather! (If you’re an expert at crochet or knitting then why not even make a full matching set with a scarf and mittens!)

Personalised clay mugs

Everyone needs the perfect hot chocolate mug, make this one extra special! You can get air-dry clay at a crafts shop or online and simply mould it to the perfect mug shape, let it dry and then decorate and paint to your hearts desire.
