Forth Valley Pride will happen next year for the first time after Creative Stirling reap 91 per cent interest in the local area.
The consultation was created in collaboration with the University of Stirling and LGBT Youth Scotland.
Participants in the consultation said they were “delighted to see this initiative being explored in Forth Valley” with 296 local residents placing their vote.
Since 2018, Creative Stirling have built a network of around 100 artists to benefit the local community. Based at 44 King Street, their Made in Stirling store houses art events, workshops and galleries.
Samantha Green, Creative Stirling’s Community Engagement Officer says: “Since the consultation was released, we have been involved in many positive discussions with people across the community, including residents, organisations, and businesses, about the potential Pride could bring for our area.
She continues: “It is important for us that local people’s voices are heard, that their choices are at the forefront of any plans, and that the event is inclusive, fun, and safe for everyone.”
Many participants voiced that it would be important for Forth Valley Pride to take place during term time for students. However, 37 per cent of the respondents have opted to celebrate during Pride Month in June.
Stirling city centre has the majority vote for the location, with 73 per cent of the respondents preferring it to Alloa and Falkirk town centres, and the University campus.
Live entertainment and community stalls have been voted as the most important elements of a great Pride.
The consultation also asked about accessibility requirements, with wheelchair accessibility at the top of the list for voters.
Previously, Pride celebrations in Stirling have been limited and many local residents have travelled to Glasgow or Edinburgh to celebrate.
Stirling MSP Evelyn Tweed says: “The results of this survey are strong evidence of demand for a Pride event in Forth Valley. It’s great to see such enthusiasm from people across the Forth Valley area.
“I will continue to support this in any way I can and I look forward to see how the organisations involved will build on this great response.”
The next stage is now underway. Creative Stirling posted online: “The next stage is to support a committee of local people to be involved with planning FV Pride & encourage local businesses/organisations to get involved too.”
The University of Stirling’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Justine Dashwood, said: “We are delighted that the proposed event has received strong support and look forward to continuing to work with partners to deliver a 2024 event that recognises and celebrates members of our LGBTQ+ community.”
