What is Earth Day?
Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, is dedicated to raising awareness about the environment. Each year is a different theme, and this year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics.
This aims to focus on the effects plastics and microplastics have on not only the environment, but on our own health too.
This year, global governments and NGOs will gather in Ottawa, Canada to continue to negotiate the terms of the United Nations Global Plastic Treaty.
Why is this important?
Earth Day is important to raise awareness of environmental issues and what we can do to help.
“Planet vs. Plastics” advocates to put an end to widespread issues. This includes phasing out single use plastics, putting an end to fast fashion and pushing for a UN Treaty on plastic pollution.
EarthDay.org demands a 60 per cent reduction of all plastic by 2040.
Earth Day has been around since 1970, and has been fighting for the environment since then. Earthday.org has over 150,000 partners in 192 countries worldwide. It is the world’s largest recruiter of the environmental movement.
What can we do?
What you can do to contribute to Earth Day is reduce your own personal usage of plastics, consider your carbon footprint and go outside and enjoy nature. Go on a walk, take the bus, walk or ride a bike rather than drive. Take the day to appreciate the nature around you!
Missed Earth Day? You can still join The Great Global Clean-up by looking for a local clean-up near you. This is where you can join others to collect and dispose of plastic in your local environment.
