Los Campesinos! are the gift that keeps on giving. A Psychic Wound is their second single in a week and it’s a classic emo banger.
This is the second single from LC!’s upcoming album All Hell. A Psychic Wound is more similar to your typical mid-west emo track.
The band describes A Psychic Wound as, “A song about fading in and out if consciousnesses and memories in this capitalist hellscape.”
LC! premiered the song live in February at Troxy in London. Hinting to fans that they had new music on the way.
The song opens with lead vocalist, Gareth, singing the line, “Tied to the pulse of the sea” – A line that immediately sets up the bleak outlook of song.
The whole band kicks right into gear after the first line. The scratchy guitar accompanied by fast paced drums. It has a classic emo beat reminiscent of bands like The Hotelier and Pet Symmetry.
The moody instruments pair perfectly with the depressing view on modern life that Gareth sings about.
When the chorus rolls around, the instruments remain stripped back. Gareth is accompanied with an acoustic guitar as he sings “It’s a psychic wound you can’t conceal”.
The rest of the instruments come rushing back for the second half of the chorus. A great wave of passion-filled rage at the failing world the band finds themselves in.
The stand-out line of the song comers in the second verse when Gareth sings, “They’re calling themselves artists, while they’re lapping up the paint they’ve spilt.”
The band repeats the chorus once more before launching into the guitar lead outro. Repeating the chorus’ lyrics, mixed with the brash guitar solo works perfectly to close the tune on a high note.
LC! are on a winning streak with All Hell so far and it’ll be exciting to see what the band releases next.
All Hell will be released on July 19.
