Brig interviews up-and-coming local rock band, The Karavats

The Karavats were formed in late 2022 with the release of their first single, ‘time machine’. However, at this point they were just jamming and playing for fun. It wasn’t until February 2023 that they played their first gig.

Brig sat down with band member, Joseph Fegan, to discuss their prospects and inspirations.

Inspirations

“Our influences are broad. We love a lot of rock n roll. Whether that’s The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. People often compare our style to bands like The Strokes and I agree. I think the biggest thing for me though is that we’ve grown past our influences. Not to say we’re better than those influences, we’re absolutely not. But we have created our style from them. We have punk, indie, folk elements. Even power ballads.”

“We formed in school, however, all it was at that point was 5 pals having jam sessions. Since then, we started taking it more seriously with people coming and going until now. Where it’s 5 pals but still 5 people who are taking the band seriously and hoping it’ll do well. The years of jamming our living rooms and in practice studios are behind us but we still do take a lot from it all”.

When asked about goals, Joseph said, “our main goal is and always has been to entertain. You always have to keep the fans and those who support you at heart. I always try to instill hope. We have fast songs, slow songs, happy songs, sad songs. The thing that links them all is hope. The sad songs aren’t just hopeless, they recognise that things won’t always be the same, they’ll get better. We try to emulate that in our shows too. People are there to enjoy themselves and if we’re not doing that we don’t deserve an audience.”

“We try to invoke something bigger in them that we could never achieve on our own”.

In future…

When asked about the future: “In terms of where we’re heading, things are looking good. We have a few songs out just now, with our two biggest being our rock n roll tune Time Machine and our slow ballad that’s sense of home.”

“We also have just supported The Chase at The Garage [in Glasgow]. On top of that, we’ll be playing a headline gig at Mchuils and a gig at Tuts for the second time this year. Our aim is to keep practicing, playing and getting our songs out to our audience, with the hope that sometime in the future we have the opportunity to go on tour or run the festival circuit”.
