Labour Councillor Margaret Brisley was appointed the new leader of Stirling Council following a special meeting of the Council on September 12th.
This comes after previous leader, Councillor Chris Kane, stepped down after he was elected as a member of parliament for Stirling and Strathallan in the recent general election.
Councillor Garry McGarvey was appointed as Depute Leader.
Brisley has served as a councillor for the past 44 years and represents Bannockburn and the Eastern Villages Ward. Prior to her appointment she had served as Kane’s deputy leader since 2022.
A retired teacher, Brisley has been involved in Children’s Services, serving as the convener of the Children & Young People Committee within the council.
Her main interests have concerned Housing, Social Services, and Equality issues.
“I am committed to being a leader that serves everyone across Stirling”
Regarding her appointed Brisley said: “I am hugely honoured to be appointed as Leader of Stirling Council and would like to thank my fellow councillors for putting their trust in me.
“I am committed to being a leader that serves everyone across Stirling and will work constructively with other elected members so we can deliver positive outcomes for our communities.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris for his hard work in the role over the past two years and his efforts to promote Stirling during a difficult time for local government.
“Like all other Scottish local authorities, Stirling clearly faces further challenges in the coming years with various external pressures. However, by working closely with our communities and other key partners, I am confident we can achieve our ambitions and forge a better future for us all.”
