The 76th Annual Emmy Awards were hosted on September 15 and it’s officially been a record breaking year for the awards.
Ahead of the ceremony, Shōgun became the most-nominated series in a single year of Emmys history with 25 nods, while The Bear set the new bar for comedy shows with 23 nominations. During the Creative Arts Emmys, Shōgun won 14 of its nominations whilst The Bear won seven of its 23.
“The most-awarded series, in any category, in a single year in Emmy’s history”
During the Primetime Emmys, Shōgun made history by winning four awards during the ceremony, bringing their total to 18 wins, making Shōgun not only the most-awarded drama series in a single year but also the most-awarded series, in any category, in a single year in Emmy’s history. The series also became the first non-English language series to win Best Drama.
One of Shōguns many awards went to Anna Sawai for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the first Asian (and Japanese) actress to ever win in the category. Hiroyuki Sanada also made history as only the second Asian actor to ever win in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category and the first Japanese actor to win in the category.

The Bear also went on to win a further four awards including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Liza Colón-Zayas, making her the first Latina to ever win the category. With a total of 11 wins at the 2024 Emmys, The Bear is now the most-awarded comedy series in a single year at the awards, breaking its previous record of 10 wins.
The Crown also had a first with Elizbeth Debicki becoming the first Australian actress to win in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama series category.
