Comic Books vs Graphic Novels: What’s The Difference?

3 mins read

Graphic novels and comic books have been around for decades; telling stories with eye-catching art and memorable characters.

The Amazing Spiderman, Amulet, Nimona and The Adventures of Tintin are all famous comic books and graphic novels that tell memorable stories with unique art styles.

However, after all this time, the differences between the two can be blurry.

Who Was First?

The first comic book likely entered circulation in either 1837 or 1897; and the first graphic novel in 1783.

Graphic Novels

Firstly, graphic novels are longer than comic books.

Depending on the series, graphic novels can span over multiple volumes. But, each book completes one story arc, like the Heartstopper books. Comic books are serialised, usually with a new release every month, with story arcs spanning months or years. Each comic book is a piece of the whole story.

Graphic novels are book-length and told through comics; drawings within panels with speech contained in bubbles or text boxes.

Some people also say that graphic novels have intense themes and symbolism. Whereas, comic books have complex characters and plotlines. The length of these types of stories enables writers to focus on different aspects of their story. The focuses within the story, however, depend on the writer. Some may create focus on creating vibrant and rich worlds, and others focus on making flawed, interesting characters.

Comic Books

Because comic book narratives span over a longer period of time, character arcs can interlink; which creates a more complicated and exciting story.

They can also include more subplots to develop characters and the setting.

Comic books also tend to focus on superheroes, but there are exceptions like Love and Rockets.

Lastly, most comic books are better suited for younger readers because of their simpler formats. They can serve as a gateway to advanced reading in the future.

Summary

With different storytelling techniques and formats, comic books and graphic novels continue to amaze readers with their art and stories.

They are also an excellent way to build confidence in dyslexic and younger readers. By bringing them to new worlds with rich representation and compelling stories.
