Tibetans living in New Delhi protested human rights violations outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi yesterday.
The protests, organised by the Tibetan Youth Congress, centred around human rights abuses in Tibet. The Tibetan Youth Congress advocates for Tibetan independence from China.
The police blocked the embassy from the protestors and wrestled some to the ground.
The number of protestors detained is unknown.
China recently celebrated 75 years of Communist Party rule, which sparked the protests.
Approximately 85,000 Tibetan exiles live in India. This includes Tibetan government representatives in-exile.
China annexed Tibet in 1951 and restricts freedom of speech, singing the Tibetan national anthem and travelling freely. In addition to banning the Tibetan flag in 1959.
China has arrested teachers and artists for criticising Chinese rule and celebrating Tibetan identity.
Celebrating the Dalai Lama’s birthday is an imprisonable offence. Tibetans believe the Dalai Lamas are the manifestation of the Buddha of Compassion. In Tibet it is illegal to mention the Dalai Lama in public or possess pictures of him.
Chinese schooling also restricts the teaching and speaking of the Tibetan language; by enforcing uniformity in textbooks and lessons to only teach in Mandarin.
