Drama in the Bake Off Tent

Biscuit Week brought the heat to the bakers, with walk outs, fainting spells, and showstopper Hollywood Handshakes.

The Signature Challenge

The first challenge consisted of twelve identical Viennese whirls, flavoured however the bakers desired.

Hazel’s coffee and hazelnut whirls ended up under baked with no definition. Not to mention she only presented eleven to the judges.

On the other end of the scale, Sumayah’s swan-shaped, goats cheese buttercream and blackberry jam biscuits surprised the judges with its unusual flavour.

The Technical Challenge

This week the judges wanted twelve identical mint cream biscuits.

What started out with twelve contestants quickly dwindled to eleven as Jeff once again took ill.

Unable to participate, Jeff walked out of the tent, leaving his attempt at the challenge behind and quitting the show for good.

Despite the drama of the season’s first ever walk-out, judging went on as usual for the bakers who stayed.

First place went to Mike, who was eleventh in last week’s technical. Dylan took the role of last this time around.

The Showstopper Bake

Prue and Paul demanded an edible puppet theatre show made of multiple biscuit aspects from each baker. The show could be based off of anything the bakers imagined, as long as it looked and tasted the part.

All bakers used either gingerbread or a slightly riskier choice of shortbread for their structures. Flavours ranged from coconut and saffron, to lemon, poppy seed and cardamon.

After a grueling four hours, with stress and tension running high, the bakes were complete. But not without a cost.

As the timer hit zero, Illiyin collapsed, the shows’ first aid rushing to help. She could not be present during the judgement, yet Paul and Prue still judged her showstopper bake, praising its design.

Christiaan’s coconut, grapefruit and saffron puppet show left the judges speechless, Paul coming to him to offer his famous ‘Hollywood Handshake’.

After the eventful day, the judges had to decide who had to go home and who to deem Star Baker.

Who Won and Who Went Home?

Unfortunately, with her disastrous Viennese whirls, low place in the technical challenge, and uneventful shortbread puppet show, Hazel was the one to leave.

Since Jeff left on his own accord, the judges only had to send home one baker.

Star Baker, however, went to Sumayah, the youngest contestant in the tent. Her interesting goats cheese and blackberry signature, third place in the mint cream challenge, and lemon and poppy seed moving puppet show secured her this weeks win.

Next week is Bread Week, will there be more drama to come?
