Summary
The university library has updated its food and drink policy. Most respondents supported relaxing restrictions, citing the need for convenience while studying. However, concerns about maintaining quiet spaces were also raised. Under the new rules, drinks in sealed containers are allowed everywhere except the Archives and Special Collections room. Sweets and small snacks are permitted in most areas, while cold food can be eaten on Levels 2 and 3. Level 4 remains a silent zone with no food allowed, and hot food is still prohibited inside the library. The policy aims to balance flexibility with a respectful study environment.
The university has announced a relaxation of its library food and drink policy following a consultation held before Christmas 2023.
Under the new policy, drinks are now permitted in all areas except the Archives and Special Collections reading room on Level 2, with all drinks still requiring lids.
Sweets and small snacks are allowed throughout the library except in the silent study area on Level 4 and the Archives and Special Collections reading room.
Cold food, such as sandwiches, can be consumed on Levels 2 and 3 but remains prohibited on Level 4, which is designated as a silent floor.
Hot food, however, is still not permitted inside the library. Students are encouraged to eat hot meals in the Atrium or Study Zones outside the library.
The decision comes in response to strong feedback from students advocating for more flexibility while maintaining certain restrictions to ensure a productive study environment.
The consultation revealed that most respondents supported easing the ban on food and drink, particularly due to limited access to the Study Zone and high demand for atrium seating.
Many students highlighted the necessity of eating as part of their study routine and expressed frustration with having to leave the library to find food.
Concerns were also raised about maintaining quiet, distraction-free spaces however respondents emphasised the importance of respecting fellow students and minimising disturbances caused by eating and drinking.
Library staff urge students to be mindful of others, dispose of waste properly, and help maintain a comfortable study environment.
The updated policy aims to balance the need for sustenance with the necessity of quiet, focused study spaces.
