Stirling University announces evening curfew on campus buildings

3 mins read

This article was updated this morning after a statement was released by the University.

Stirling students will now have limited access to the Cottrell, RG Bomont and Iris Murdoch buildings, according to an announcement this morning.

The restricted evening access will start tonight, Monday, 3 February, with buildings reopening 12 hours later at 7am the following morning.

The announcement did not confirm how long the curfew will last.

Students and faculty will still have access to library facilities and the Macrobert Art Centre after 7pm, but entrance will only be available through the Queen’s Court Reception in the Cottrell Building or via the accessible route and buzz for entry near 2Z.

Thankfully, for university societies, on-campus room bookings will still go ahead as planned, meaning societies can still congregate as usual after 7PM.

Sabbatical Officers Leen Ali and Justine Pedussel said: “The Students’ Union was not advised ahead of the changes, and we are disappointed that the communication on this matter has not been clear from the University.

While we are happy that there is no material restriction on our amazing student societies running social events, meetings and rehearsals, we believe that any change to how students access facilities at the University should include consultation with student representatives.”

On the University Portal, students visiting campus central after 7pm have been given the following advice:

“Alight at the bus stop across from the Sports Centre and walk along the new boulevard to Campus Central.

“Alternatively, alight at the bus hub, walk through the Cottrell car park, and follow the path around the Court Building.”

University staff have also reminded students that app Safezone exists as a way to alert University security when they are in need of help. Students can also use the app to check-in with security when they are working on campus late.

UPDATE

A University spokesperson said: “All campus facilities remain open. The University has temporarily changed evening access to a limited number of buildings. This is to ensure the safety of all building users at times when usage is reduced.

“Access is available to staff and students between 7am and 7pm to the Cottrell, RG Bomont, and Iris Murdoch buildings. After 7pm, entry and egress remains available through the Queen’s Court Reception in the Cottrell Building, where security will assist if needed.”
