What is International Women’s Day all about?

4 mins read

International Women’s Day 2025 has officially rolled around – but what is it all about? The day has been celebrated for over 100 years, surrounding feminism and all things for women!

The day is celebrated annually on 8th March throughout the world as a celebration of what women have achieved, what they have contributed to society and of who they are. It has been traditionally celebrated for years as a feminist day aimed at recognising the fight for equal rights for women in all aspects of life.

So, what has the area of Stirling been doing to celebrate, and what can you still get involved with?

Past events

‘Radical International Women’s Day Rally’ took place at Buchanan Steps in Glasgow on 8th March in order to “take a stand against genocide, exploitation, and gender oppression”. ROSA Scotland organised what they called an ‘intersectional anti-capitalist rally’. The day was influential in making women’s voices heard about the issues they fight for. As seen on the poster on their Instagram: rosa.scotland.

‘Accelerate Action’ is a discussion panel that was held on campus in the University of Stirling. Accelerate Action focuses on the inequality faced by women in employment. The panel run by the organisation aimed to recognise the achievements of female leaders and business owners.

Free gin at Stirling Distillery on 8th March was offered to celebrate International Women’s Day! Delicious drinks such as Stirling Classic Gin and Spicy Pink Gin were offered to parties of two. Who wouldn’t love a free drink to celebrate?

What can you still get involved with

Women Techmakers Scotland are to hold an event on 15th March at The Social Hub Glasgow – talks, workshops, Q&A’s and givaways are said by Eventbrite to happen to discuss how women can get involved with work in technology. The tickets are £3-£5 the proceeds will go to dressCode. dressCode is a Scottish Charity showing how students can pursue Computing Science while focusing on the gender gap. Look Up and Beyond was also set to hold an event on 13th March at DLA Piper in Edinburgh 18.00-20.00. “Network with like-minded individuals, listen to inspiring speakers, and enjoy a night dedicated to celebrating the incredible women in our lives. We are thrilled to be joined by the incredible Alice Thompson, who is best-known for co-founding Social Bite, a charity and social business providing homes, jobs, food, and support to empower people to transform their own lives.” – Look Up and Beyond, sourced on Eventbrite.

Alloa Women’s Festival 2025 is also set to take place this month to celebrate women. They have stated on their event poster that their aim is to: “Organise. Educate. Agitate. A day of feminism, networking & activism.”

International Women’s Day 2025 was clearly well celebrated throughout Stirling and the whole of Scotland. With rallies, talks, and gatherings – equality was discussed and further fought for women not just in Scotland, but all around the world.
