GSOC Announces Second 12-hour Game-athon for local charity

Stirling University’s Video Games Society, (GSOC) is hosting their second 12-hour charity gaming event of the year this Saturday.

Over 12 hours, members of GSOC hope to raise money for local non-profit Start Up Stirling.

The event will be held 10am-10pm in room X24 in the Cottrell building on the Stirling University campus.

Every game the society owns will be available to play, from Mario Kart to Blazing Beaks and Just Dance 2.

The society owns an Xbox, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Wii and a custom-built PC for members to use.

Start Up Stirling

Start Up Stirling was founded in 1994 to provide essentials to homeless people. Now the charity focuses on people in crisis across the Stirling council area.

Stirling Council, the Scottish government and Forthgiving also fund the cause.

People in rural areas like Stirlingshire pay 10-20 per cent more for basic expenses, such as fuel, than people living in urban areas.

What this event means to GSOC

Charity events such as the 12-hour-gameathon do not only provide funds for good causes, but also give the opportunity to try new games and socialise casually.

Publicity Officer for GSOC Damien said: “This is by far the largest event we organise during the semester!

“It’s a time for us to open the society lockers and finally let all our consoles and games loose. And despite what a lot of people think, no one is getting locked in the room for 12 hours straight and forced into a state of constant gaming and delirium (although the latter has sometimes happened regardless).

“All we aim for by 10pm is to be satisfied with the amount we have raised for Start Up Stirling, as well as look back at the cultivation of all our hard work over the semester and finally close those doors behind us.”
