It is a well-known biological fact that humans cannot fly; however, Revolution Circus Show throws this fact into doubt, as the boundaries of human ability are pushed in an exemplary display of soaring limbs and twisting torsos.
Set against the backdrop of Edinburgh’s stunning Dynamic Earth Stratosphere venue, Revolution Circus is a spectacle of the finest quality. By combining theatrical notes with acrobatics, dance, and even juggling, Revolution Circus weaves a smart narrative through an impressive display of skill.
Upon entering the venue, we were struck by the glorious backdrop of clean glass that fragmented the evening sunshine over the performance, breathing life into the space and creating a truly magical atmosphere before the show even began. What better way to set forth the incredible human stories that were to come?
It is the cast that brought the true magic to the 45-minute performance. Gao Yang (acrobatics, Chinese pole), Bao Dongwei (juggling), Chen Jinyu (aerial hoop & silk), Hou Xing (cyr wheel, Chinese pole), Li Sha (acrobatics, Chinese pole, aerial silk) and Li Jingyu (contortion, acrobatics) worked together seamlessly, each adding a uniquely groundbreaking and jawdropping skill, all whilst nurturing a smooth-flowing narrative. The cast’s skills were nothing short of extraordinary. Each displayed the true pinnacle of their craft by stripping their acts down to the finely crafted bones.
It was not just juggling, it was not just Chinese pole – it was something more, something that had magic radiating from each movement, drawing gasps and waves of applause from the awe-struck audience. The precision of the cast’s skill remained intact throughout, fresh and powerful, concise in both narrative and movement.

There were no unnecessary airs and flares – no colourful paint, feathers, balloons. This circus performance was clean, precise, and beautiful. Nothing needed filling in, or hiding under layers of superfluous design. Hats off to Set & Light designer Qi Huazheng, as the clean white backdrop illuminated by fairy lights and the gentle turn of the Earth created the perfect scene for the beauty of Revolution Circus.
