Coffee Shop Roulette: BRAW’s favourite Stirling Coffee Spots for meeting new people

4 mins read

There is nothing worse than arranging to meet a new person and turning up to a venue where the vibes suck. There’s no music to cover inevitable awkward silences, the lighting is bright and sterile, and the coffee is simply awful. In a new city, it takes plenty of trial and error to rule out the spots that don’t meet your expectations, but time can be limited before you start finding potential friends.

We’ve all been there…the cakes are small and cost £5, you can hear the dreadful sound of milk burning under the steamer, and you just don’t have the confidence to turn around try elsewhere. Fear not! To help you avoid ending up sweating over a bitter, expensive latte as your prospective friend/romantic interest angles towards the exit, BRAW Magazine has compiled a coffee date cheat sheet.

The Book Nook

Located on Upper Craigs in Stirling City Centre, The Book Nook is a hot spot for students and locals alike. With warm bookshelves lining the walls, bubbly and kind service, a banging playlist (I honestly need a link to it), and drinks to be savoured, you just can’t go wrong. But, be prepared: you may have to time your visit perfectly to score a table. The Book Nook is popular for a reason.

Friend of Mine

Although commonly regarded as more of a brunch/lunch/dinner location, I am including Friend of Mine here as I met one of my now closest friends for coffee in the first few weeks of university. Perched in the centre of Bridge of Allen, the restaurant’s location offers the opportunity for walking (either from the university or along the river), charity shopping, and potentially dinner afterwards if all is going well. With soft lighting, funky music, and an alternative menu, Friend of Mine cannot be forgotten about as a top spot for that first date (be it friendship or otherwise).

Darnley Coffee House

Nestled in the heart of Stirling’s Old Town, Darnley Coffee House is truly one of my favourite little spots. The bustling venue serves large cafetieres where you pick your own coffee blend – don’t head here expecting a cappuccino. Inside, it is warm, cosy, and atmospheric, with a soundtrack of chatter. Additionally, being just around the corner from the castle, the location opens up the opportunity to extend your afternoon exploring the historical monument (£1 entry for Young Scot Card holders!). A cosy wee spot, perfect for a long coffee and good conversation.
