Stirling Uni is hosting Remembered: Hiroshima and Nagasaki Exhibition, created by the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for Atomic Bomb Victims. Since 2003, it has visited a total of 14 countries however this is the first time it has reached the UK. The Exhibition is from October 6th to November 14th and can be found at Campus Central level 3.
The exhibition is to inform people of not only the history but the effects of the atomic attacks. It aims for visitors to use this knowledge in building a more peaceful future.
Sake and speeches opened the exhibition, with both the Chancellor and Vice chancellor of Stirling University speaking. In addition to University personnel, Hiroshi Nose the Director of the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, and the Ambassador for Japan Hiroshi Suzuki.
In his speech Ambassador Suzuki re-affirmed the mission of the exhibition and applied modern conflicts. Attendees were reminded of the immense level of global conflict stating: “We all get affected when Putin threatens the use of nuclear weapons.”
The Ambassador goes on to speak to the purpose of the exhibition as an educational tool so younger generations can continue to learn: “understanding the horrific reality is the very first step.” And “the torch must be passed onto the young people.”
In August of 1945 120,000 people were killed in the bombing of Hiroshima. 11 days later another atomic bomb killed a further 73,000 in Nagasaki. While effective in the aims to force the Japanese government to surrender, the Allied powers had used unprecedented force with devastating effects on the lives of civilians.
