Scotland’s National Football Team made history this Monday, beating Denmark 4-2. Scottish fans have waited 28 years for this moment as the Men’s Team is now qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, held in North America.
Scott McTominay, a midfielder for Napoli and the Scottish National Team, scored the first goal with a bicycle kick in the first three minutes. Lawrence Shankland, Hearts of Midlothian’s striker, scored 78 minutes into the game. Kieran Tierney, Celtic’s left-back, scored three minutes into extra time. Finally, Kenny McLean, a midfielder and a left-back for Norwich City, scored from the halfway line at 90+8 minutes.
This was a historical game, as a younger generation will be able to watch Scotland play in the World Cup. Last night’s game was the decider whether Scotland or Denmark got a guaranteed place in the tournament. Denmark only had to draw against Scotland to qualify; however, Scotland needed a win. The Scottish team showed their determination from the very start of the 90-minute, with the first goal in the third minute.
First Minister John Swinney was cheering the national team on. Additionally, Tennis legend Andy Murray was also cheering and showing his support. Other Scottish celebrities including James McAvoy and Gordon Ramsay took to their social media to show their support and happiness once Scotland won the game.
The Tartan Army have been a dedicated fanbase for Scotland through thick and thin. Scotland erupted in cheer once the whistle was blown. Roars of happiness and tears of joy could be seen in pubs across the country. Proud Scots are happy and relieved at the win and that a new generation will get to see Scotland at the World Cup. We now go on to America to show the world that “yes sir, we can boogie”.
