Several university buildings damaged by flash floods

3 mins read

UPDATE: As of June 26, only Pathfoot and the sports gym will remain closed. All other buildings will re-open, though potentially with minor disruptions.

EARLIER: Several university buildings have been damaged by flooding that followed last night’s heavy rainfall. Student accommodation, lecture buildings, and the sports gym have all been affected.

Juniper Court was initially evacuated and though many students returned to their rooms, some were moved to Andrew Stewart Hall.

Alexander Court and Beech Court also flooded, though these appear to be the only accommodation buildings affected.

Both lecture buildings have also flooded throughout different areas. Pathfoot is closed for the time being.

Whilst Cottrell remains open, it is closed across all floors from the X corridor to the Iris Murdoch building.

Another area affected, the sports gym will remain temporarily closed due to heavy flooding.

Refresh Bar and Bistro, Haldane’s Restaurant, and the atrium were also subject to flooding but will remain open. However, the INTO building is currently closed.

On the various closures, deputy secretary Joanna Morrow said: “The safety of our students, staff, and visitors to the campus is of paramount importance. While the campus remains open, a number of areas and buildings have been affected and will not be open to students and staff today, Tuesday 25 June.

“An ongoing assessment of the campus is underway and a further update will be provided later today via email and the university’s social media channels.”

The Tennis Centre was unaffected by the floods and thus the graduation ceremonies, which began today, June 25, will go ahead as normal.

VP Communities Josh Muirhead said: “We are overjoyed by the university’s response to the flooding, and all areas of our community came together to help sort out the problems.

From senior management to general staff, students to sabbs, everyone lent a hand where they could to make sure graduation goes off without a hitch.”

If any alternative arrangements for teaching or exams are necessary, students will be contacted directly, but should assume anything scheduled will go ahead as normal.
