New sports centre reaches highest point in construction

The sports centre redevelopment remains on time, as construction works continue.

The University sports centre redevelopment has reached a new stage in its progress, as construction reaches its highest point to date.

All three levels of the new centre are now erected, awaiting for the next stage of development, which will include an installation of the glass facade.

The announcement comes just weeks after Stirling was named The Times ‘Sports University of the Year 2020’, partly due to this new £20 million investment.

As Brig reported in August, the project remains on track for completion before the beginning of the 2020/21 season. This has been confirmed by Sports President Gill Thayne.

Unlike the work taking place in the atrium of the university, the redevelopment of the sports centre has remained on target for the entirety of its construction.

University Principal and Vice-Chancellor Gerry McCormac said: “It’s fantastic to see progress at such a pace”, adding that “the redevelopment will play a huge role in enhancing the student experience at Stirling.”

Once completed, the new sports centre will include an indoor cycling studio, and an additional three-court sports hall, as well as a high-performance suite and a new café. These additions aim to transform the sports centre into one of the best university sport facilities in the UK.

Sports President Gill Thayne added: “The redevelopment work is looking brilliant. The framework that has gone up in the past two months really brings the shape of the new build to life.

“It’s all really exciting and I can’t wait to see the finished result next summer.”
